Spain’s football community is following with concern the physical condition of Lamine Yamal, the teenage prodigy of FC Barcelona. According to a report from the Catalan newspaper Sport, the 18-year-old rising star is not suffering from a conventional injury, but may be dealing with a chronic case of pubalgia, a condition commonly known among athletes as sportsman’s groin.

A complex and recurring condition

Pubalgia causes persistent pain in the lower abdominal and pelvic area, often triggered by explosive or repetitive movements. Physiotherapist Lluís Puig explained to Sport that the problem can appear during natural growth stages: “During adolescence, postural changes and muscle development don’t always progress at the same pace. It’s something you learn to live with, not something that simply goes away after treatment.” Specialists emphasize that recovery requires careful management, physiotherapy, and gradual workload adjustments, rather than a single medical solution.

Five games missed and signs of overload

Yamal has already missed five competitive matches this season, a notable figure given his rapid rise. Doctor Luis Ripoll, interviewed on the Spanish radio show El Larguero, said he had observed clear signs of pubalgia in the young forward: “This condition limits a player’s ability to move and shoot by nearly 50 percent. That’s exactly what we saw during El Clásico,” he noted. Ripoll urged caution, stressing that the player must learn to manage the discomfort and avoid aggravating it through overexertion.

Hansi Flick asks for patience

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick also addressed the matter after the 3–1 win over Elche, choosing his words carefully: “I can’t say the issue is fully healed. It comes and goes. Lamine has to learn how to handle it patiently.” The German manager reaffirmed that the club’s approach remains conservative and protective, putting the player’s health and development above short-term performance.

A talent Spain wants to protect At just 18, Lamine Yamal is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young talents, a symbol of Spain’s footballing future and of Barcelona’s new generation. His case highlights the importance of closely monitoring young athletes’ physical growth, especially those who reach elite competition at such an early age. With time, medical care, and proper management, the hope within the club is that Yamal can continue his extraordinary career without compromising his long-term wellbeing.
