The start of the new NFL season was overshadowed by an unusual incident already dubbed “Spit Gate.” Just six seconds after the opening whistle of the highly anticipated matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, defensive lineman Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting directly on quarterback Dak Prescott.
The gesture, considered a blatant act of disrespect and unsportsmanlike conduct, immediately sparked outrage among players, referees, and fans present in the stadium. The officials wasted no time in penalizing the Eagles with a 15-yard penalty and ejecting Carter, leaving Philadelphia shorthanded right from the start.
The action occurred right after the pre-game opening ceremony, as Prescott was getting ready for the first snap. Amid the confusion, the Cowboys capitalized on the situation and scored on their first play with a run by Javonte Williams, taking advantage of the penalty and the disorganized opposing defense.
After the game, Carter issued a public apology, calling his action a mistake that would never happen again and admitting that he had let down his team and the fans. However, the gesture was harshly criticized on social media and by sports analysts, including Stephen A.
Smith, who called it “inexcusable” and urged the league to impose stricter sanctions. Hours later, new footage surfaced suggesting that Prescott may have spit first, though not directly at Carter but rather as part of his pre-snap routine.
Prescott denied any intention of provoking the defensive lineman and explained that it was an involuntary act, also adding that he regretted Carter’s ejection, calling him a great player.
Despite the controversy and a lengthy weather delay caused by rain and lightning, which suspended the game for more than an hour, the Eagles managed to regroup and ultimately defeated the Cowboys 24-20 in a clash that will be remembered more for the scandalous start than for the final score.
