What a performance! Hollywood icon Angelina Jolie, now 50, stunned at the San Sebastián International Film Festival with an appearance that seemed untouched by time: youthful, radiant, and utterly captivating. During her visit to the coastal city in northern Spain on the shores of the Bay of Biscay, Jolie appeared with a fresh and graceful style, barely aged, wearing her hair loose, bright red nails, and a glamorous aura that recalled the golden days of classic cinema legends.
As for accessories, she needed very few — only a bold cocktail ring shone as a statement piece of elegance and restraint. Yet Jolie was not only making headlines for her looks. In front of the cameras, she addressed the political situation in the United States with striking candor: “I love my country, but I don’t recognize it at this moment. These are very difficult times,” she said, referring to the political climate under President Donald Trump.
The actress also presented her new film Couture, in which she plays Maxine Walker, a horror film director tasked with shooting a short feature for a French fashion brand during Paris Fashion Week.
The storyline takes a darker turn when Maxine is diagnosed with breast cancer while also enduring the painful process of divorce. Torn between film sets, medical appointments, and the strained relationship with her daughter, Maxine finds herself immersed in the unfamiliar world of haute couture, where her path crosses with Ada (Anyier Anei), a South Sudanese model experiencing her first big opportunity, and Angèle (Ella Rumpf), a makeup artist who dreams of becoming a writer while struggling with a series of precarious jobs.
The role inevitably draws parallels with Jolie’s own life, marked by highly publicized dramas such as her separation from Brad Pitt and her mixed experiences behind the camera as a director. In 2013, Jolie revealed that she had undergone a preventive double mastectomy, followed by the removal of her ovaries, after tests confirmed she carried a genetic mutation that significantly increased her risk of breast and ovarian cancer. “I lost my mother and my grandmother to this cancer,” she admitted, often moved to tears when speaking of her mother.
She explained that during the filming of Couture, she thought of her mother constantly, and that the project helped her confront and heal emotional wounds. With her appearance in San Sebastián, Jolie reaffirmed her enduring status as one of Hollywood’s greatest figures while also showcasing her ability to blend personal experiences with artistic expression on a global stage.
The Basque festival, recognized as one of the most prestigious film events alongside Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, provided the perfect setting for the star to shine both on the red carpet and as a creator telling intimate and universal stories.
