Spain’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has decided to dismiss the case involving singer Julio Iglesias, 82, after determining that Spanish courts lack jurisdiction to hear the matter. According to the ruling, the alleged incidents did not take place on Spanish territory and the complainants reside outside the country. The complaints were filed by two women from the Dominican Republic who worked at properties owned by the artist in the Caribbean.

Both alleged that they were subjected to abuse and to a work environment characterized by pressure and control during 2021. Prosecutors emphasized that the decision to dismiss the case does not assess the substance of the allegations, but is based solely on jurisdictional grounds. Under Spanish law, courts are not authorized to pursue cases in which the alleged conduct occurred abroad and does not involve Spanish residents, unless specific legal conditions are met. As a result, the investigation cannot proceed within Spain’s judicial system. Julio Iglesias has categorically denied the allegations.

In a recent statement, the singer expressed “deep sadness” over the accusations and rejected any claim that he abused, coerced, or mistreated the women involved. He described the allegations as false and damaging to his personal reputation. The artist stated that he has always maintained respectful conduct toward those who worked for him and indicated his willingness to cooperate with authorities in any jurisdiction deemed competent.

No further legal actions have been announced at this time. Legal observers note that a dismissal based on lack of jurisdiction does not constitute a ruling on guilt or innocence. Rather, it reflects the procedural limits of a specific legal system and does not preclude potential proceedings elsewhere. The case has attracted public attention due to Iglesias’ international profile and the serious nature of the claims, highlighting the complexities of cross-border legal complaints involving high-profile figures.

For now, the matter remains closed in Spain, without prejudice to any future legal steps that the parties may pursue in jurisdictions considered legally appropriate under international law.
