Francis Buchholz, longtime bassist of Scorpions and a key figure in the band’s most successful era, has died at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer. His passing closes an important chapter in the history of European hard rock and marks the loss of a musician closely tied to the band’s global rise. Buchholz was part of Scorpions during their years of greatest international impact, when the German band conquered the world’s biggest stages and shaped a sound recognized across generations.
His bass work played a crucial role in the rhythmic foundation that defined that golden period. Among the albums he contributed to is Love at First Sting, one of the band’s best-selling records, which features “Wind of Change,” the iconic ballad written by Klaus Meine that became a musical symbol of the end of the Cold War and a changing world. Born on February 19, 1954, Buchholz took part in the legendary 1984 world tour, during which Scorpions performed at iconic venues such as New York’s Madison Square Garden and major arenas in Los Angeles.
Global hits like “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and “Still Loving You” cemented the band’s status as an international powerhouse. His collaboration with Scorpions ended in 1992 following a complex dispute over the band’s management. The disagreement led to lengthy legal proceedings, including cases that reached Germany’s Federal Court of Justice, which ultimately ruled that his dismissal from the band was lawful. Despite the controversy, Buchholz continued his musical career. After leaving Scorpions, he worked with Michael Schenker on projects such as Temple of Rock, remaining an active and respected presence within the international rock scene.
Schenker is the younger brother of Scorpions founder Rudolf Schenker. The news of his death was confirmed through a statement posted on his Facebook profile, signed by his family, stating that the musician passed away peacefully and surrounded by love. “We are heartbroken,” the family wrote, noting that they stood by his side throughout his fight with cancer.
With the passing of Francis Buchholz, Scorpions lose one of the musicians who helped shape their sound and global legacy. His work lives on through songs that defined an era and continue to resonate with fans around the world.
