Former Chinese Minister of Agriculture Tang Renjian was sentenced to death on Sunday for corruption, in a ruling that has drawn significant international attention. According to the Changchun People’s Court in the northeastern province of Jilin, the death sentence will be carried out with a two-year suspension. This means that if the defendant demonstrates good behavior and cooperates with the authorities during that period, the penalty could later be commuted to life imprisonment.

The court determined that Tang Renjian accepted bribes and material benefits worth more than 268 million yuan — approximately 32 million euros — between 2007 and 2024. Judges stated that the scale of the bribes “caused particularly severe harm to the interests of the state and the people,” which justified the harshness of the sentence. During the proceedings, Tang confessed to his crimes and expressed remorse, factors that were taken into consideration but did not prevent the imposition of the death penalty, the most severe punishment in China’s legal system.

Over the course of his political career, Tang held several senior posts, including governor of the northwestern province of Gansu and deputy head of the southern autonomous region of Guangxi, before becoming Minister of Agriculture. The case is part of the sweeping anti-corruption campaign launched more than a decade ago by the Chinese government, under which numerous senior officials have been prosecuted and handed down exemplary punishments.

Tang’s conviction underscores Beijing’s message of “zero tolerance” toward corruption, although it also fuels debate about the use of the death penalty for economic crimes and the transparency of judicial proceedings in the country.
