Meta has announced one of the most ambitious investments in its history: the construction of a data center so massive that its footprint would be comparable to the size of Manhattan. The company, led by Mark Zuckerberg, confirmed that it will invest hundreds of billions of dollars to strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure, embarking on what it calls a race toward “superintelligence.”
The plan includes building enormous AI “superclusters” capable of operating with several gigawatts of power, designed to support advanced, large-scale AI models. Among the leading projects is Prometheus, expected to go live in 2026. But even more monumental is Hyperion, a next-generation data cluster designed to scale up to 5 gigawatts, which Zuckerberg claims would cover “a footprint comparable to a significant part of Manhattan.”
To fund this unprecedented expansion, Meta has raised its capital expenditures for 2025 to between $64 billion and $72 billion, using current revenue streams to support the initiative. To accelerate deployment, Meta has already started building temporary “tent-style” structures to function as provisional data hubs while the full-scale facilities are completed. The strategy reflects the company’s urgency to stay competitive against major rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. In parallel, Meta is aggressively recruiting talent, offering compensation packages exceeding $100 million to attract top AI engineers.
The company has also invested over $14 billion in Scale AI and other tech infrastructure ventures. Zuckerberg recently participated in a high-level tech summit, where he discussed expanding access to the power grid and federal land as part of a broader strategy to support the growth of AI supercenters. Meta’s vision goes beyond traditional infrastructure — it is building the digital equivalent of modern cathedrals, capable of powering the next generation of artificial intelligence. With Prometheus and Hyperion, Meta positions itself at the forefront of the AI race, not just as a social media company, but as a titan of global technological transformation.
