Arsenal temporarily extended their lead in the English Premier League to five points with a commanding performance against Aston Villa. The London side recorded a 4-1 victory over the team that had been third in the table, ending Villa’s run of eleven consecutive official wins. With the result, the Gunners secured their sixth straight victory and applied pressure on their closest challenger, Manchester City, who are set to play on New Year’s Day.
The first half was balanced and ended scoreless, but the match shifted decisively after the break. Gabriel Magalhães opened the scoring by turning the ball into the net following a corner kick and a challenge involving Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. Just four minutes later, Martin Zubimendi doubled the lead after a brilliant through pass from Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard, delivered with the outside of his foot. Arsenal’s dominance continued in the second half.
Leandro Trossard made it 3-0 with a strike from the edge of the box and then provided the assist for substitute Gabriel Jesus, who scored the fourth goal moments later. Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins pulled one back in stoppage time, offering little more than a consolation.
The victory allowed Arsenal to avenge their most recent league defeat, which had come three and a half weeks earlier at Villa Park. Mikel Arteta’s side remain unbeaten at home this season, having won nine of their ten league matches at the Emirates Stadium, further strengthening their title credentials. In the title race, what had appeared to be a three-way battle is increasingly shaping into a more direct contest.
Aston Villa, coached by former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, now sit six points off the pace after suffering their first defeat at the Emirates since Emery’s departure in 2019. Elsewhere in the league, Chelsea and Manchester United both dropped points again and remain stuck in the table behind reigning champions Liverpool.
Chelsea have won just one of their last seven league matches following a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, while Manchester United were held by bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers, who earned their first league point since early October thanks to a goal from Czech defender Ladislav Krejci, after Joshua Zirkzee had given United the lead earlier in the match.
