The musical project Breaking Rust, an artist created entirely through artificial intelligence, has reached number one on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart with the track “Walk My Walk,” marking a milestone in the rise of AI-generated music.
Although it does not lead the overall country charts (which include radio airplay and streaming), it now dominates the official digital sales rankings of the magazine. Since mid-October, the project has shared dark, cinematic clips of a lone cowboy across social media, gaining tens of thousands of followers and millions of monthly plays. Songs like “Livin’ on Borrowed Time” have also surpassed the one-million-play mark, strengthening its digital footprint in the music scene.
Who’s Behind It?
The songs are credited to Aubierre Rivaldo Taylor, a name linked to another AI-driven project called Defbeatsai. However, several observers question whether Taylor is a real person or simply a fictional identity designed to give the project a human face.
Context Behind the Number One
The Country Digital Song Sales chart measures paid digital downloads, not radio airplay or streaming performance. In those other categories, artists like Morgan Wallen and Cody Johnson continue to hold the top spots, but “Walk My Walk” achieved an unprecedented victory for a fully artificial creation.
The Industry Debate
The rise of Breaking Rust comes amid a growing debate about the role of artificial intelligence in music. While some celebrate innovation and algorithmic creativity, others call for transparency, regulation, and protection of artistic and human rights. Breaking Rust thus stands as a symbol of a new musical era, where technology and emotion share the same stage.
