We’ve been promised smart cities, zero-emission electric cars, solar panels harvesting the power of the sun, and home devices that reduce energy and water use. Everything seems to point toward a cleaner, greener future. But behind the glossy image of “green tech” lie uncomfortable questions that need to be asked.
Are these solutions truly as eco-friendly as they seem? Or are we falling into a new kind of consumerism — this time dressed up as environmental awareness? Most so-called “green” devices rely on the extraction of materials like lithium, cobalt, and rare earth metals, which are often mined under toxic, dangerous, and exploitative conditions. Electric vehicle batteries, for example, have a limited lifespan, and their recycling remains a significant challenge.

There’s also a rising trend of greenwashing — companies branding their products as sustainable with little evidence, simply to win over environmentally conscious consumers. We buy “green” devices thinking we’re doing good… while in many cases, we’re just shifting the problem elsewhere. Real sustainability isn’t just about gadgets — it’s about rethinking how we consume, produce, and live.
A product labeled as “eco-friendly” isn’t enough if it was created under destructive practices or meant to be replaced every two years. Final thought: Technology can indeed be an ally of the planet — but only if it’s honest, ethical, and built on a foundation of long-term awareness.
