The international wrestling community is mourning the loss of one of its greatest legends. Hitomi Obara, Olympic gold medalist at London 2012 and eight-time world champion, has passed away at the age of just 44. The heartbreaking news was confirmed over the weekend by the Japan Self-Defense Forces Physical Training School, where Obara had recently worked as a coach.
Out of respect for her family’s privacy, the cause of death has not been disclosed. Obara, still known to many fans by her maiden name Hitomi Sakamoto, dominated the global wrestling scene for more than a decade. Between 2000 and 2008, she won six world championship titles in the 51-kilogram weight class, which was not an Olympic category at the time. In 2010, she switched to the Olympic weight category of up to 48 kilograms — a decision that proved to be life-changing.
After capturing gold at the World Championships in Moscow (2010) and Istanbul (2011), she crowned her career with a historic Olympic victory in London in 2012. After retiring from competition, Hitomi Obara remained closely tied to the sport, serving in leadership roles such as Director of the Japan Wrestling Federation. In June 2024, she was appointed head coach of the Japanese women’s national team, a role that symbolized her deep commitment to the future of wrestling in her country.
Her death leaves a void not only in Japan but in the hearts of wrestling fans and athletes around the world who were inspired by her strength, dedication, and excellence. Wrestling Legend Hitomi Obara Passes Away at 44 – Olympic Gold Medalist and Eight-Time World Champion Mourned Worldwide
