A Japanese company has unveiled a device that seems pulled straight from a science-fiction movie: a full-body “human washing machine” capable of cleaning, massaging, monitoring, and drying a person in just 15 minutes. The concept, presented at the Osaka World Expo, immediately drew global attention for its unusual blend of luxury, automation, and futuristic personal care.
The machine is essentially a capsule equipped with a reclining seat, where the user is gently washed with microbubbles and a fine mist of warm water designed to clean the skin without friction. Throughout the cycle, the system continuously monitors vital signs to ensure safety, while soft music and calming visuals are displayed inside the capsule to create a spa-like experience. Once the washing process is complete, the machine automatically dries the user without requiring any physical effort. According to the manufacturer, the prototype was received so enthusiastically that they now plan to launch commercial production.
\The Japanese firm behind the invention, Science, stated that an initial batch of 50 units is scheduled for release. But this futuristic comfort comes with a luxury-level price tag: Japanese media estimate the cost at around 60 million yen, equivalent to more than €330,000. Despite the steep price, interest is already strong. A hotel in Osaka has reportedly placed the first order, and a U.S. resort has expressed interest in acquiring several units for its premium suites.
While the device may sound extravagant or even humorous, analysts note that it reflects a rising trend in high-tech self-care systems—combining automation, wellness, and personalization. Whether it becomes a mainstream innovation or remains a niche luxury item, the “human washing machine” is likely to spark debate about the future of personal hygiene and the boundaries of convenience in an increasingly automated world.
