Manchester United secured an important victory in the only Premier League match played on traditional Boxing Day, defeating Newcastle United 1–0 at Old Trafford. The win lifted the record champions temporarily into fifth place, in a high-profile clash against the reigning Champions League holders.
The decisive moment came in the 24th minute, when 21-year-old Danish midfielder Patrick Dorgu scored the winner with a spectacular volley. It marked his first goal for Manchester United, a memorable breakthrough that proved enough to settle the contest. After taking the lead, United struggled to maintain control in the second half and gradually ceded possession to Newcastle.
The visitors increased the pressure, forcing the hosts to defend deep and rely on organization and resilience to protect their narrow advantage. Despite a shaky second half, the team coached by Ruben Amorim held firm until the final whistle, securing only their third league victory in the last nine matches.
The result underlined both United’s recent inconsistency and the significance of the Boxing Day success. With one more match played, Manchester United drew level on points with Chelsea, the Club World Cup champions in fourth place, and defending champions Liverpool, who sit sixth. However, the title race remains distant, as league leaders Arsenal, who host Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, maintain a ten-point advantage at the top of the table.
