The Department of Defense has begun mobilizing military assets in the region, including at least two warships, P-8 surveillance aircraft, and attack submarines, in an operation expected to last several months and involve patrols in international waters as well as the use of regional airspace.
The mission aims to target groups such as the Sinaloa Cartel and Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, whose activities are considered a serious threat to U.S. national security and a key factor in the pressure at the southern border, as part of a broader strategy in the fight against drug trafficking and irregular migration. In addition, the government has intensified aerial surveillance of Mexican criminal organizations to gather valuable intelligence while evaluating military options
