Tensions in the Indo-Pacific escalated again after Japan’s conservative prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, warned that a Chinese attack on democratically governed Taiwan could trigger a military response from Japan. Her remarks drew immediate condemnation from Beijing, coinciding with Tokyo’s announcement that it plans to deploy medium-range surface-to-air missiles on the island of Yonaguni, located just 110 kilometers from Taiwan’s eastern coast.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated that preparations for the deployment are progressing steadily and are intended to strengthen Japan’s defense posture against potential regional threats. Taiwan welcomed Japan’s decision, asserting that Tokyo has every sovereign right to reinforce its own security and that such measures contribute to regional stability. Beijing, however, denounced the plan as a deliberate attempt to heighten tensions and provoke military confrontation.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning accused right-wing forces in Japan of dragging the region into “disaster,” while reiterating that China remains determined and capable of defending its national territorial sovereignty. Earlier in November, China had warned Japan of a potential “crushing defeat” should it intervene militarily in a Taiwan-related conflict.

Beijing maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under control—claims that Taiwan firmly rejects as a self-governing, democratic nation. Japan’s evolving military posture and increasingly direct rhetoric highlight the growing volatility in a region that has become central to the geopolitical rivalry between major powers.
