British police carried out one of their largest mass arrests in recent years on Saturday, detaining around 425 demonstrators in central London during protests in support of the recently banned group Palestine Action.

The demonstration began peacefully in Parliament Square but quickly escalated into confrontations as police attempted to disperse the crowd. Officers reported being punched, kicked, spat upon, and struck by thrown objects, while protesters accused authorities of heavy-handed tactics.

The government banned Palestine Action earlier this year under anti-terrorism legislation, arguing that the group posed a threat to public safety after incidents in which activists broke into Royal Air Force bases and damaged military aircraft.

The group has also staged high-profile actions targeting defense companies in the UK that supply arms to Israel, accusing them of complicity in the Gaza conflict. Critics argue that the ban is an overreach and threatens the right to protest, with several human rights organizations condemning the move as disproportionate.

They insist that while some members may have engaged in illegal acts, outlawing the entire group risks silencing legitimate voices calling for accountability in UK foreign policy. Politicians remain divided: government ministers praised police actions as necessary to maintain order, while opposition MPs raised concerns about the erosion of civil liberties. Legal experts suggest that the arrests could spark lengthy court battles, with questions about whether supporting a banned group automatically constitutes a criminal act.

For many citizens, the incident reflects growing tensions in Britain over the war in Gaza and the country’s role in supplying arms to Israel. With hundreds facing charges and campaigners vowing to continue their actions, the conflict between protesters and authorities shows no sign of easing.
