U.S.-based software company OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is moving forward with its global infrastructure strategy by planning the construction of a massive data center in India with a capacity of at least one gigawatt. According to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter, the company is already seeking local partners to help advance the project, which is seen as a critical step in OpenAI’s ambitious “Stargate” initiative in Asia.
The Stargate project was first announced in January by U.S. President Donald Trump as an unprecedented private-sector investment of up to $500 billion—around €430 billion—aimed at strengthening artificial intelligence capabilities through advanced infrastructure. The initiative is backed by heavyweights such as SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI itself.
Within this framework, the Indian facility would not only serve as a strategic hub for Asia but also symbolize Washington’s determination to position its leading companies in emerging markets as competition with China in the tech sector intensifies. OpenAI has already registered as a legal entity in India and is currently building a local team to oversee the project.

Although the location and construction timeline remain unclear, speculation suggests that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman could officially announce the new facility during his visit to India in September. That visit is expected to focus on strengthening technological partnerships and presenting the new site as one of the largest data centers the company has ever planned outside the United States.
The scale of the infrastructure is particularly notable: one gigawatt of capacity is roughly equivalent to the energy required to power a medium-sized city, underscoring the enormous electricity demand generated by advanced AI models. At the same time, the project raises logistical and environmental challenges, especially in a country where energy demand is already under considerable strain.
Nonetheless, the Indian government may view the initiative as a golden opportunity to attract multibillion-dollar investments, create thousands of high-skilled jobs, and further establish India as a global hub for technology and artificial intelligence. So far, OpenAI has not provided official comments on the project and did not respond to media inquiries. Still, the news has sparked significant attention across business and political circles, seen as evidence of the growing effort by the United States to secure leadership in AI, diversify its critical infrastructure, and build new strategic partnerships across Asia.
