Yahoo CEO Jim Lanzone has sparked debate about the future of media, warning that current practices by artificial intelligence companies pose a serious threat to the sustainability of the publishing industry. In a recent interview, Lanzone stated that generative AI platforms are using protected media content to train their models and provide user answers without directing traffic back to the original sources.
“What’s happening is unsustainable,” he said, stressing that news organizations invest massive resources in producing verified information, yet the benefits are diverted to tech giants that absorb content without compensating the creators. According to Lanzone, this creates a dangerous paradox: AI systems feed on high-quality journalism while simultaneously undermining the ability of publishers to finance it.
He cautioned that if this trend continues, the industry could face an even deeper crisis, with severe consequences for media diversity and democratic societies. Several publishers have already begun demanding licensing agreements or payments for the use of their content in an effort to restore balance.
For Yahoo and other traditional outlets, the solution lies in establishing a regulatory framework that ensures AI companies not only use existing material but also contribute to sustaining the information ecosystem.
“Without a strong and independent press, the quality of information that artificial intelligence itself relies on will deteriorate,” Lanzone emphasized, warning that the future of digital journalism depends on resolving this growing tension between technological innovation and copyright protections.
