What was once portrayed as a Hollywood fairy tale romance ultimately became a story without a happy ending. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, after a highly publicized reunion that culminated in marriage, decided to end their relationship last year. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, Lopez has shared in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning a revealing testimony about what that breakup meant for her personal and professional life.

The 56-year-old singer and actress said that the separation helped her “grow” and gain greater confidence in herself. “It was the best and the worst at the same time,” she noted while reflecting on that stage of her life. Although the divorce brought pain and difficult moments, the artist insists that it allowed her to transform and discover a new version of herself: “I am a different person now than I was last year,” she admitted.

The subject has resurfaced due to the filming of her new feature film Kiss of the Spider Woman, produced by Artists Equity, a company cofounded by Ben Affleck. Lopez acknowledged that working on that project alongside her ex-husband was emotionally challenging, although she also recognized that without his support, the film might never have been made.

“I will always give him a lot of credit for that,” she said, describing the experience as a period full of contrasts: joy during the shooting days and tension in her private life. The story of Lopez and Affleck, popularly known as “Bennifer,” began in 2002 during the filming of Gigli. That same year, they became engaged, but media pressure led to the cancellation of their planned wedding in 2003 and ultimately to their breakup.

Seventeen years later, in 2021, they surprised the world by rekindling their relationship, getting engaged again, and marrying soon afterward in a ceremony hailed as the fulfillment of their long-awaited love story. However, the idyll did not stand the test of time, and in April 2024, the couple separated. Their divorce was finalized in January of the following year. Today, Jennifer Lopez says she has found strength in what she went through.

“It was the best thing that ever happened to me because it changed me,” she reflected, making it clear that despite the heartbreak, the experience gave her confidence, resilience, and a more mature vision of herself and her career.
