Pop singer Lily Allen has revealed that she is currently undergoing therapy to address a shopping addiction, a behavior that intensified following the release of her acclaimed album West End Girl in October. Since then, the artist admits she has spent large amounts of money on luxury items during a period that also coincided with significant personal changes in her life. In a special Christmas episode of her podcast Miss Me?, which she co-hosts with her close friend Miquita Oliver, Allen spoke candidly about her situation.
During the conversation, she mentioned that she was playing with a large diamond and emerald ring she had bought for herself. “I got myself a little present — well, not that little. You have to treat yourself and celebrate the moment,” she said, before acknowledging that she had likely gone too far. The singer of Smile explained that she had convinced herself she was “a multimillionaire,” which led to a pattern of impulsive spending that included designer handbags, jewelry, and the purchase of a car.
Recognizing this behavior was a turning point that pushed her to seek professional help and confront the issue directly. Allen shared that she began EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) about four months ago, a method she says has been particularly effective in helping her work through compulsive behaviors and difficult emotional experiences.
“I don’t exactly understand the science behind it, but it works for me,” she emphasized, adding that the therapy has had a positive impact on her life. This personal process comes during an intense creative phase for the artist, as West End Girl also explores deeply personal aspects of her life, including the end of her marriage to actor David Harbour, offering an honest and vulnerable perspective that has resonated with listeners.
