Iran has appointed a new commander for its powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps following the death of the previous leader during recent military strikes. Senior Iranian military figure Ahmad Vahidi has been named to lead the elite force, marking a significant development in the country’s military leadership at a moment of escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The appointment comes after the reported death of former commander Mohammad Pakpour, who was killed during coordinated attacks attributed to Israel and the United States. The loss of such a high-ranking figure represented a major blow to Iran’s military command structure. Iranian authorities moved quickly to fill the position, signaling the importance of maintaining continuity within the Revolutionary Guard. The organization plays a central role in Iran’s defense strategy and oversees both domestic security operations and international military activities. Ahmad Vahidi is considered a veteran figure within Iran’s security establishment.
Over the years he has held several senior positions within the Revolutionary Guard and has been closely linked to key strategic operations carried out by the organization. He previously served as a senior figure connected to the Quds Force, the branch of the Revolutionary Guard responsible for operations beyond Iran’s borders. That unit has long been associated with Iran’s regional influence across the Middle East. Vahidi’s name has also been associated with controversial historical accusations related to terrorist attacks outside Iran. Investigators have linked him to events that occurred in Argentina during the early 1990s, allegations that have remained politically sensitive for decades.
In 1992, a bombing targeted the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, killing 29 people and injuring many others. The attack shocked Argentina and triggered international investigations into the networks responsible. Two years later, another devastating attack struck the AMIA Jewish community center in the same city. A truck filled with explosives detonated outside the building, leaving 85 people dead and hundreds injured in one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Latin American history.
The accusations surrounding those events have long complicated Iran’s international relations and have led to arrest warrants and diplomatic disputes. Tehran has repeatedly rejected the allegations, describing them as politically motivated.
With Vahidi now taking command of the Revolutionary Guard, analysts say his leadership could influence Iran’s military posture during a particularly volatile moment in regional politics. The appointment signals that Iran intends to maintain a strong and experienced leadership structure despite recent losses within its military hierarchy.
