A fresh overnight attack on Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Izmail has had direct repercussions in neighboring Romania. In the border village of Plauru, located on the Romanian side of the Danube, authorities ordered the evacuation of residents after a liquefied gas tanker truck caught fire and was deemed a serious threat due to its highly flammable cargo.
As an additional safety measure, roads and waterways in the area were temporarily closed, according to officials from the EU member state. Romania’s Ministry of Defence stated that “no unauthorised intrusion into national airspace” had been detected.
Rescue teams emphasized that the evacuation was carried out mainly as a “precautionary measure,” amid concerns that the fire could escalate or that new explosions might occur in an already tense regional environment. The incident comes against the backdrop of growing worries that the war’s impact is spreading beyond Ukraine’s borders.
The previous Friday, the Russian ambassador had been summoned to Romania’s Foreign Ministry after the discovery of alleged drone debris on Romanian territory, believed to be linked to Russian air strikes on Ukraine.
Since the start of Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Romania – a NATO member – has repeatedly reported drone sightings in its airspace as well as fragments of crashed or downed drones found in different parts of the country. These episodes are fuelling fears that the conflict could increasingly affect neighbouring states and further destabilise security across the wider Black Sea region.
