The Ukrainian army is currently facing mounting pressure on both the eastern and southern fronts, according to the Southern Army Group. Officials confirmed tactical withdrawals of up to ten kilometers in several areas after heavy Russian artillery fire reportedly destroyed “all shelters and fortifications” previously established. The fiercest battles are now taking place near Hulyaypole, a small eastern town that has become one of the main targets of Russian forces. Moscow also aims to cut off Ukrainian supply routes further north, isolating key positions. Local reports indicate that several settlements close to the front line have been repeatedly bombed by Russian drones and glide bombs.
Attrition and Technological Imbalance
Military analysts attribute the situation to a growing imbalance in manpower and technology between the two sides. Ukraine’s shortage of trained personnel and equipment, combined with Russia’s overwhelming drone and artillery capabilities, has forced Kyiv’s forces to retreat in several sectors. In recent weeks, Russian forces have claimed to capture new positions in the east, while Ukraine maintains a flexible defense strategy, pulling back to reorganize its lines and prevent larger losses.
Recruitment Crisis and Desertions
Adding to the challenges on the battlefield, Ukraine is experiencing a deepening recruitment crisis. According to official figures, around 20,000 men have deserted or left their units without permission since October, though the true number is believed to be significantly higher. Videos circulating on social media show forced recruitment attempts, many of which fail due to resistance from civilians and solidarity from bystanders.
In July, Ukrainian authorities claimed they could mobilize up to 30,000 new troops per month, but current estimates suggest those numbers have fallen. Roughly 200,000 Ukrainian soldiers are believed to be deployed along the front, compared with 600,000 to 700,000 Russian troops in total across Ukraine. However, the exact number of Russian forces engaged directly in frontline combat remains unclear.
Incentives and War Fatigue
The Kremlin continues to offer large financial incentives to encourage new recruits, while in Ukraine the human and emotional toll of the war grows increasingly visible. Despite the setbacks, Ukrainian forces remain determined to hold key positions and regroup for the coming weeks.
