China on Tuesday urged the European Union not to “challenge” U.N. Resolution 2758, the landmark decision adopted in 1971 that transferred China’s seat at the United Nations from Taipei to Beijing. The warning came after the EU stated that the resolution merely addressed the issue of representation and made no mention of Taiwan, prompting a sharp reaction from Beijing. In a statement,

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the European bloc of “distorting the essence and intent of the resolution,” reaffirming that China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable. Beijing maintains that the resolution provides international legal backing for its claim over Taiwan, which it considers an integral part of Chinese territory. Taipei, however, has consistently rejected that interpretation, arguing that Resolution 2758 does not determine

Taiwan’s political status nor authorize its exclusion from participation in international organizations. The debate over the meaning of the resolution has resurfaced as cross-strait tensions continue to rise, with Beijing increasing military and diplomatic pressure on the island while seeking to limit Taiwan’s international visibility. The European Union, for its part, upholds a “One China” policy but supports Taiwan’s participation in global forums when such involvement does not imply recognition of statehood.

As global geopolitics shift, the renewed dispute over a resolution passed more than half a century ago underscores the fragility of East–West relations — and the continuing strategic importance of Taiwan in the balance of international power.
