An outdoor cinema event in Noisy-le-Sec, a suburb northeast of Paris, was abruptly canceled after a group of young Muslim men allegedly issued threats over the screening of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film Barbie, claiming the movie “promoted homosexuality” and “offended women.” The incident has sparked a nationwide debate over freedom of expression, cultural diversity, and the limits of public order.
According to local officials, the decision to cancel was made by Mayor Olivier Sarrabeyrouse out of concern for public safety after tensions escalated. The screening, part of a community summer program, was intended to be a family-friendly cultural event, but quickly became the focus of protests organized through social media. The backlash has drawn strong condemnation from France’s political and cultural leaders. Culture Minister Rachida Dati described the incident as a “serious attack on cultural freedom” and urged authorities to stand firm against intimidation.
Gender Equality Minister Aurore Bergé warned of the growing influence of fundamentalist groups attempting to impose conservative values and restrict artistic expression in certain neighborhoods. President Emmanuel Macron and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin also expressed concern, noting that some radical movements are actively trying to infiltrate community and public institutions under the guise of moral or religious advocacy.
On the other hand, some left-wing politicians criticized what they perceive as an opportunistic political reaction from the right, arguing that the incident is being exploited to fuel anti-Muslim sentiment and deepen social divisions.
