Italy is experiencing a nationwide wave of strikes in public transportation, but this time the protest is not about wages or working conditions. Instead, it is a show of support for a humanitarian mission aimed at helping the population of the Gaza Strip.
The mobilization, called the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” was organized by several trade union federations and has disrupted services across the country, affecting state railways (FS), the private rail company Italo, regional train services, as well as local transport, freight, logistics, and taxi services.
The disruptions are not limited to a single day, as further strikes have been announced in the airline sector and other industries, raising expectations of significant impacts on airports, train stations, and transport routes throughout Italy. Passengers are being advised to prepare for delays and cancellations in several regions.
In response, the FS Group strongly recommends that travelers check the status of connections before leaving for their journeys, using the Trenitalia app, the official website, or the free customer service hotline. The protests are framed within a broader movement of solidarity with Gaza.
Previously, the port workers’ collective CALP had organized a strike in Genoa that successfully blocked a shipment of weapons to Israel. Now, Italian trade unions are throwing their support behind the
“Global Sumud Flotilla,” an international fleet of activists that sought to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea. Unions such as the USB (Unione Sindacale di Base) argue that the Israeli government disregards international law and describe the prevention of aid delivery as a “terrorist act.” For the unions, the message is clear: to raise awareness of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and to pressure Italian and European authorities to take a firmer stance.
